When the Ford Focus Electric launched last summer, only 67 Ford dealers across the nation were certified to sell the company's plug-in vehicle. By November, that number surpassed 200. Ford now says the number of EV Certified dealers will exceed 900 by Spring. Certified dealers must have plug-in cars ready to demonstrate, and staff trained to understand electric vehicle.
The EPA finalized its MPGe rating for the plug-in hybrid 2013 Ford Fusion Energi. The ratings are 108 MPGe in the city, 92 MPGe highway—and 100 MPGe combined. The Fusion Energi is likely to be one of the most popular new plug-in cars to be introduced in 2013.
Ford this week announced the price of the the Fusion Energi at $39,495 for the less-costly SE Luxury trim. The price of the the top-of-the-line Fusion Energi Titanium at $40,995. That means that the price of the Fusion Energi is nearly identical to the $39,145 Chevy Volt, prior to incentives and tax credits.
Mea Culpa. Last week, I criticized Ford for hyping up the capabilities of its upcoming C-Max Energi plug-in hybrid. I was wrong. I wrote that Ford marketers used trumped up numbers to make the C-Max Energi appear a lot more capable than the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid. After speaking with John Davis, the chief engineer for the C-Max in North America, I learned that the C-Max Energi is indeed substantially more capable of driving purely as an EV than the Prius Plug-in—and its technology is in fact an innovative step forward for plug-in hybrids.
Panasonic announced last week that it signed a deal with Ford Motor Company to provide prismatic lithium-ion battery cells for its vehicles. Terms of the deal call for Panasonic to supply battery cells for hybrid version of the Ford Fusion and C-Max, and for the Ford Fusion Energi and C-Max Energi plug-in hybrids. Ford will assemble the lithium-ion packs in-house.
Among Ford's various available powertrain options for the recently unveiled 2013 Ford Fusion is the plug-in hybrid Fusion Energi, a vehicle that Ford claims will be the "most fuel-efficient midsize car in the world." The Fusion Energi is on a fast production schedule, officially launching in fall 2012.
