Virtual Chevy Volt Will Be Included in Forthcoming Video Game

The Chevy Volt will be getting some prime exposure with gamers thanks to an agreement with Microsoft to include a version of the vehicle in its "Kinect Joy Ride," which will be available this fall. The game will be one of the first Xbox releases to be designed for the Kinect motion system, a revolutionary new controller technology that enables users to play video games using only the motion of their bodies.

GM Will Provide "Connected" Volt Owners a Longer Free Trial of OnStar

GM envisions that Chevy Volt owners will interact with their cars in brand new ways, with Tony DiSalle, the Marketing Director for the Volt, indicating in a that the Volt "connected customer" concept is "going to be unlike in any other vehicle that’s ever gone to market." However, all of that interaction will be done through GM's OnStar, which begs the question: Is the OnStar pay service almost required to own a Volt? GM seems to think so, given that they are providing a longer free trial of OnStar to Volt customers.

In the brave new world of next gen automotive engineering and design, having 30 years of institutionalized combustion engine experience is not always considered a strength. In recognition of this, major auto manufacturers are increasingly leaning on non-traditional methods of bringing new blood into the engineer and designer mix. In particular, GM — as the major sponsor of both Challenge X and the currently running EcoCar — has taken a lead role in finding their new talent from college competitions.

GM Hints That Volt Could Be Less Expensive Than Expected

For the last two years GM has given mixed signals about what the Chevy Volt will cost when it goes on sale later this year. I've heard everything from $35,000 to $45,000, but recently the rumors have settled on a $40,000 price tag. Even so, GM hasn't said a peep about the price in several months, leading many to wonder what they're waiting for. It could be that Nissan stole their thunder by setting the LEAF price at $33,000 and they are just waiting to give themselves a little more separation from that announcement. But perhaps GM is waiting because supplier prices are dropping so quickly that they can squeeze a few hundred more dollars out of the Volt price before announcing it?
