Ford Expands UK Testing of All-Electric Delivery Vehicle

Ford's European electric vehicle took a leap forward this week when the company expanded plans to test a fleet of its electric Transit Connect delivery vehicles. The Transit Connect Electric demonstration fleet is developed with funding assistance from the UK Government's "Ultra-Low Carbon Vehicle Demonstrator" program.

While enthusiastic electric car fans are jumping at the chance to be among the first owners of the Nissan LEAF and Chevy Volt, business owners considering an electric commercial vehicle might pause to crunch out the dollars and cents of going electric. Ford Announces $135 Million Investment in Hybrids and EVs, 220 New 'Green Collar' Jobs

Ford will be investing $135 million in Michigan, creating 220 so-called “green collar jobs” in the Detroit area. At an event at Ford's new Ypsilanti battery plant, executive vice president Mark Fields said that the new money would turn the plant into a “center for excellence in vehicle electrification.”

Ford Transit Connect EV Will Be Available to European Fleets Starting in 2011

Ford and Azure have announced they will make their Transit Connect electric van available to European fleet operators beginning in 2011. The fully electric truck is designed for commercial fleets and won Truck of the Year at the Detroit auto show in January, and its combustion-powered sibling, the Transit Connect, has been a major hit since its release in 2003 and is nearing 700,000 total sales. Ford thinks that the electric model could also make a big splash in the market.
