Hummer Manufacturer Will Assemble Transit Connect Electric

Azure Dynamics, which will design and manufacture the electric powertrain for Ford's Transit Connect electric van, has selected Indiana-based AM General LLC to provide final assembly on the vehicle. AM General is best known for manufacturing a very different kind of fleet vehicle—the famous U.S. military Humvee. That design inspired GM's notorious Hummer brand, which was also manufactured by AM.

The gasoline powered Transit Connect was voted truck of the year at the 2010 North American Auto Show, in part because of its already superior fuel economy and $22,000 price tag. The electrified version is expected to cost significantly more, though government incentives and fuel and maintenance savings could help quite a bit in making up the cost difference.

The Transit Connect Electric will begin production at an AM General plant in Livonia, Michigan, beginning in 2011.
