Mercedes-Benz EQC 400


The EQC 400 has mostly the same style and appearance as the Mercedes-Benz GLC, which provides its platform. The EQC is four inches longer than the GLC—lending the Mercedes EV a more coupe-like profile. It’s nearly the size of the mid-size GLE but with a lower stance.

Mercedes designers also added a techy quality to the EQC’s visual elements. The front grille and headlights are combined into a single, sleek black panel. The flush tail and narrow rear window are accented by an LED light bar that slashes across the entire back end.

The all-electric EQC also uses blue accent lights in the grille and within the 20-inch wheels. The blue tinge is continued with the interior’s glowing buttons and mood lighting. The air vents have a rose and gold tint. Some reviewers believe the overall appearance is more futuristic and Japanese than other Mercedes vehicles.


The driving character of the EQC is similar to the conventional GLC crossover. But given the EQC’s use of two powerful electric motors, it’s a lot quicker—providing 402 horsepower and 564 pound-feet of torque.

The front motor provides a steady drive for maximum range. The rear motor adds performance as needed. Responsiveness and handling are provided by balancing the two. The SUV’s Sport mode unleashes more power from the throttle, allowing the EQC 400 to zip from zero to 60 mile per hour in a quick 4.9 seconds.

In media drives of pre-production models, reviewers say the EQC is exceptionally smooth and quiet even by EV standards. The level of comfort is what you would expect from a Mercedes.

Steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters provide the ability to set varying levels of regen braking. The “D--” setting approximates a one-pedal EV braking experience. Most drivers will keep the brake regen setting at Auto, which takes traffic, radar data, and topography into consideration for the best balance of drivability and optimal regen.

Efficiency and Range

The “400” part of the EQC 400’s model name designates the intended driving range in kilometers. That equates to 400 kilometers or about 250 miles from a single charge.

Considering the testing cycles used by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency—and the vehicle’s 80 kilowatt-hour battery pack—the official range should be closer to 220 miles.

The EQC’s primary European competitors, the Jaguar I-Pace and Audi e-tron, use 90-kWh and 95-kWh batteries respectively. Mercedes said its 80-kWh figure applies to actual usable energy storage—so the three vehicles offer similar ranges of between about 220 and 240 miles.

For a daily home charge, the EQC’s onboard 32-amp charger allows for a 7.4-kW rate. That’s plenty fast for a full overnight charge—although not quite as quick as the e-tron’s 9.6-kW output or Tesla’s 11.5 kilowatts.

Highway charging via the EQC’s CCS port happens at 110-kilowatts. That equates to 40 minutes to bring up the batteries from a 10 percent to an 80-percent state of charge.

Tesla chargers are slightly faster at 120 kilowatts, while the rest of the industry is racing towards providing at least 150 kilowatts. In practical terms, the Mercedes-Benz EQC 400’s fast-charging speed will work fine for highway road trips—perhaps adding another five to 10 minutes for a pit stop compared to the best competition.

Remember, the EQC’s battery pack is relatively small at 80 kilowatt-hours. We suspect that future Mercedes EVs will move to 150 kilowatts.

Passenger and Cargo

As a small luxury crossover, the EQC 400 provides the same passenger comfort and cargo space as the conventional GLC. There’s more than enough in the rear compartment for travel gear or trips to Costco. Because the EQC’s platform is borrowed from vehicles with engines under the hood, there’s no extra storage in a frunk.

The interior feel of the EQC will be familiar to Mercedes owners—but with a space-age feel. The seats are supportive and comfortable. In the cockpit, you’ll find the brand’s same center console, trackpad controller, and sizable cup holders. The elongated digital display features a 10.25-inch instrument cluster (with energy usage and range indicators) on the left and a 10.25-inch media display on the right.

In December 2019, Mercedes-Benz announced the price for its all-electric EQC sports-utility vehicle. A $67,900 starting price for a luxurious, 200-mile, 402-horsepower luxury crossover is a good start for the EQC brand.

Sales begin in Europe in June 2019 and will arrive in North America in early 2020.
