And though the SUV market may never again reach the heights that it did during the early-2000s, the question for carmakers isn't so much whether Americans still want to drive the vehicles but whether they can be made practical in an era of energy uncertainty and rising fuel economy standards.

Exclusive: Mitsubishi's North American CEO Details New Electric Vehicle Strategy

Last week we heard that Mitsubishi—in an effort to staunch a sales decline and move the company into the future—is completely revamping its product strategy to focus on global platforms and electrified vehicles. The plan ambitiously calls for the introduction of six new electric vehicles by 2015, plus an unknown number of hybrids, and will entail a 30% increase in Mitsubishi's global research and development budget. Mitsubishi Will Make Electric Cars the Focus of a Major Strategic Shift

There's no question that Mitsubishi has been struggling as of late—especially in the U.S., where sales have slid badly and the company's Normal, Illinois, factory has been sitting idle a large part of the time. As one of the few automakers to have joined the push for electric vehicles early on, watching the slide has been a bit disheartening. But as part of gigantic strategic realignment to try and reverse the trend, Mitsubishi has announced that electric cars will be the centerpiece of its bid to grow sales globally.

Mitsubishi Developing Lithium Batteries With Toshiba, But For What?

On Friday, we first heard of a battery development and manufacturing deal between Mitsubishi and Toshiba. Today, we learn that the two companies have actually been collaborating for more than a year, working to bring Toshiba's Super Charge Ion Battery (or SCiB) to electric vehicles.

Plug-in Hybrids Headed to Tokyo Auto Show

There was a long parade of plug-in cars at last month’s Frankfurt Auto Show. This month, it’s Japan’s turn to unveil a new crop of plug-in hybrids at the Tokyo Motor Show, which opens to the public on Oct. 24.
