Interview: Toyota Talks about Electric RAV4 Plans

Tesla Motors and Toyota today announced that the two companies signed an agreement to initiate the development of an electric version of the RAV4. We spoke directly with Toyota to learn if the announcement is about a speculative prototype vehicle, or a real electric vehicle headed into production. "Toyota wouldn’t make this kind of investment, and building prototypes, if we weren’t really interested in bringing to market," said Mary Nickerson, Toyota’s Advance Technology Vehicles National Manager.

Toyota and Tesla Finishing Work on Two EV Prototypes

Tesla and Toyota will finish work on two electric SUV prototypes by the end of this month. Fully-electric Toyota RAV-4 and Lexus RX retrofittings will represent the first tangible products to come out of the surprising relationship between a Japanese automotive Goliath that has remained skeptical about the future of EVs, and a California startup hell-bent on blazing the trail for an electrified transportation future.
