Five Canceled Electric Car Concepts: Lessons Learned

It’s easy enough for a car company to write up a press release, push an exciting electric-drive concept car to an auto show platform, and strike up the music. In the process, hopes are raised for a ground-breaking electric car—only to be dashed with the swipe of an auto executive’s hand. Takeaway: No matter what anybody says, be skeptical until you see a confirmed launch date and price—and multiple reviewers have taken a test drive of a production model, not a concept or test prototype.

Volkswagen Will Look to China to Determine its EV Future

Volkswagen CEO Martin Winterkorn said in a statement today that VW will judge Chinese consumer reaction to electric cars before it commits to a full scale EV strategy. The company had said in the past that it planned to be the worldwide leader in electric vehicles by 2018, projecting that EV sales would come to make up 3 percent of its total business.

Hybrid and Electric Cars Will Emit Vroomtones

After years of complaints from blind pedestrians that ultra-quiet hybrid cars pose a safety threat, the auto industry is responding by producing on-board devices that emit sounds, such as jet engines, boings, or human voice saying, “Excuse me.” One day, electric car and hybrid drivers might download “vroomtones” for their cars, the way they download ringtones for cell phones today.

VW Unveils World’s Most Efficient Road-Legal Hybrid

By the end of the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show, Volkswagen will have unveiled as many as nine world premier vehicles. What’s the common denominator? “Maximum efficiency," according to VW.
